The trowel

In the Woods

The trowel is an archaeological tool left behind in the sheds after Katy Devlin’s killing. Its recovery exposes a crucial omission in Damien Donnelly’s account and links the physical evidence to abuse he had not disclosed; in the interrogation, the overlooked object becomes the means by which the investigators confront him with the limits of his story.

The trowel left out of Damien’s account

Damien recounts leaving the murder rock and Katy’s torch in the tools shed, then washing the gloves and returning them to their bag before locking the sheds and walking home. The trowel is absent from this account. The investigator recognizes that omission as deliberate rather than as a lapse of memory, making the missing detail significant even before the tool is recovered.

The shed holds more than the objects Damien admits leaving there. The rock and torch are covered by tarps, and Damien recalls that their shadows briefly made it seem as though Katy were moving. He says he could not continue and left. Against this account of an interrupted attempt to deal with the scene, the omitted trowel marks a separate and more incriminating part of what happened.

Recovery and confrontation

The trowel is found in the tools shed on the morning of Damien’s interrogation. Its recovery lets the investigators challenge the story he has given rather than rely only on his distress or partial admissions. When Damien protests that he has already told them what happened, the investigator connects the post-mortem findings to the trowel and states that Damien used it to abuse Katy after killing her.

Damien responds by putting his hands to the sides of his head and pleading for the confrontation to stop. He then begins crying again. The object thus changes the course of the questioning: what Damien had managed to leave unspoken is put to him as a specific act supported by the examination of Katy’s body and the recovered tool.

Evidentiary significance

The trowel functions as material evidence of the gap between Damien’s account and the events established by the investigation. His earlier omission had appeared alongside his account of the rock, torch, gloves, and locked sheds; once the trowel is found, that omission can no longer remain an indistinct silence. The investigators use the recovered object to expose what his version left out.

Its importance lies not simply in its presence at the shed, but in the connection drawn between the tool and the post-mortem findings. It turns a concealed detail into an evidentiary challenge, forcing Damien to face an act beyond the killing itself and deepening the account of Katy’s death.
